Orchidaceae, the Orchid family, is the largest family of flowering plants. Dating back 120 million years ago, they live on every continent except Antarctica. I am fascinated by their almost alien appearance. I love the bizzare shapes that are flamboyant and brilliantly colored. Orchids attract pollinators for reproduction by smell, visual mimicry and trickery. They can imitate the appearance of insects including bees and butterflies with the patterns on their petals. Orchids can lure a pollinator to the edge of its pouch and forcing the insect to fall in. When it finds the only exit, it brushes against the pollinia and pollinates the plant.
